of curly hair.
Avoid Scrunching Your Hair
Many people who have curly hair have gotten into the habit of scrunching
their hair to make it appear curlier. Scrunching actually promotes frizz
and dryness, however. Instead of scrunching, wash your hair with a non-foaming
shampoo that won’t strip your hair of moisture. Then, comb it with
a wide-tooth comb. Touch your hair as infrequently as possible to avoid
transferring oils from your hands onto your hair.
Don’t Wash Your Hair Daily
Curly hair is already prone to dehydration. Daily shampooing will further
strip your hair of moisture, and dry curls lead to frizz, breakage, and
damage. Shampooing your hair once or twice a week is sufficient. In between
shampooing, you can put conditioner in your hair, or use a dry shampoo.
You can even forego shampoo altogether and buy a specially formulated
conditioning cleanser. Your hairdresser should be able to recommend the
best one for your hair type, and your hair salon might even sell some.
Use the Right Styling Tools
Straightening irons can actually help you style your curls and give them
more bounce. Use a ceramic flat iron, and don’t let it get too hot,
as heat will damage your hair. The optimum temperature for your flat iron
is 365 degrees Fahrenheit. You should also use a diffuser attachment on
your hair dryer to preserve the shape of your curls and prevent heat damage.
Use a comb instead of your fingers to style your hair while blow-drying.
Only dry your hair about 50% with a hair dryer, and then let it air dry.
