How to Combat Dry or Damaged Hair

When hair is processed, colored, or overstyled it can become dry and damaged. Knowing the proper hair care techniques can keep hair healthy even when it is under stress. Here are a few ways to combat dry or damaged hair.

Damaged Hair

Don’t Overcolor
When hair is lightened, its pigment is removed. This can make hair very dry, so it is important to avoid overcoloring it. A single-process color should only be applied to the hair once a month. Highlights are only needed every two to three months. Keeping distance between colorings will ensure that the hair isn’t over processed and dried out.

Use the Proper Products
Choose a shampoo and conditioner that are made for color-treated hair. These products are designed to make the hair look healthy. They also work to protect the color. If the hair color is darkened but the hair still feels dry, it might be due to overstyling. When hair is constantly exposed to heat from the flat iron or through blow drying, it can dry out and break. Avoid blow drying hair daily. To keep hair looking shiny throughout the day, use a shine-enhancing finishing product, such as an anti-frizz serum.

Always Use Conditioner
After coloring, always use a deep-conditioning treatment. This will moisturize the hair from root to end, and keep it looking shiny and healthy. Choose a good conditioning product, and apply it in the shower. After massaging the conditioner into the hair, cover the head with a plastic shower cap with holes in it. Stand in the steam for five to 10 minutes with the cap on. This will open the cuticle, allowing the conditioner to penetrate.
